KILIMANJARO CLIMB

Kilimanjoro is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the largest ext inct volcanoes . It can be climbed at any time except in .April and may dur ing the long rains. January to march and August to October are the best cli mbing seasons. We use Marango Route which is the easiest and most accessibl e.

DAY 1: NAIROBI - MASHI

Arrive Namanga border town at 1000 hrs.After immigration formalities, c ontinue to .Arusha for lunch. Drive to Moshi where the afternoon is spent organizing climbing gear. Dinner and overnight at spring land Hotel Moshi.

DAY 2: MOSHI - MANDARA HUT

After breakfast, drive 45kms to Marangu gate an altitude of 1,860Walk t o Mandara hut 2,741m ( 9,00ft) through dense semi-tropical rain forest , f or your overnight on Kilimanjaro meals and overnight at hut.

DAY 3: MANDARA - HOROMBO HUT

Start early morning for a ten hours walk towards Horombo . The landscap e becomes more rugged and rocky but superb, with both mawezi and Kibo peak s in view . You spend your second night at the mountain at Horombo hut , a n altitude of 3,761m ( 12, 335ft)

DAY 4: HOROMBO HUT

Take a tiring 13km walk which takes 6hrs to Kibo Hut 732m ( 15,520 fts 0 above sea level . Spectacular mountain vegetation like cactus ,ground w ell and lobelia appear meals and overnight at the hut.

DAY 5: KIBO- UHURU PEAK - HOROMBO HUT

The final attempt to the summit is made in the early hours of the morn ing at 2.00 am . It takes about 5 hours to climb the steepest and most di fficult part of the route to Gilman’s point( 5, 681m) 18,630 fts from Gil man’s it takes 11/2 to 2 hours to Uhuru peak, 5, 896m (19,344) Descend to Horombo for dinner and overnight.

DAY 6: HOROMBO - MOSHI

Descend is rapid After breakfast , drive to Arusha for lunch , then to Nairobi via Namanga Border tow, arriving early in the evening.

Information Background
Marangu Route: It is referred to as the tourist route because of services available on the way to the summit. Unlike other routes, it is relatively easy, has low success rate because many unfit people attempt Kili trek via this route and fail, it is a popular route and accommodation is in huts. It is preferred by many trekkers. It is also beautiful. It is the easiest and shortest route. Ascent and descent are done on the same path.

DAY 1:Arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, pick up and transferred to the Springlands Hotel or similar for overnight bed and breakfast.

Day 2: Leave Moshi town about 0900hrs and drive for about 45 minutes to Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro. Do the necessary paperwork at the park gate such as registrations. Begin hiking at about 1030hrs. Hike through rainforest from the park gate (6000 ft) to Mandara Hut (9000 ft), taking about 4 hours. Stop half way for lunch. Reach Mandara Huts at about 2 or 3 PM. Unpack, rest and have some tea or coffee. Dinner is served during early evening, about 7 PM. A side trip to Maundi Crater (about 15 minutes away) is a good way to see the surroundings as well as views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Bathrooms are available with running water.

Day 3: Wake to breakfast (approx. 7:30am) and pack for the next leg. Break camp at about 8:30am and hike to Horombo Huts (12,000 ft). This leg should take 5 to 6 hrs. You travel through lower heath land with small shrubs being the main vegetation. Stop half way for lunch. Views of Mawenzi are amazing. The summit of Kibo can be seen from Horombo Huts. Arrive Horombo Huts at about 3 PM. Rest, unpack and prepare for dinner. Bathrooms are available with running water.

Day 4: Horombo Huts (12,000 ft) this day you will have extra day at Horombo for acclimatization. It will be a kind of training, and you will walk around the hut up to the Mawenzi turn hut. You will get an experience and be familiar to the summit weather. You will overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 5: Wake to breakfast as usual (if you wake before sunup you can get some great photos of the sunrise). Pack and begin the hike to Kibo Huts (15,500 ft). The first half of the day’s hike traverses the upper heath land while the second half crosses the vast saddle that connects Mawenzi and Kibo. The saddle is an alpine desert that resembles a lunar landscape. Be carefulnotice signs of altitude sickness. The day’s hike should take 6 to 7 hours, stopping half way for lunch. No running water at Kibo Huts.

Day 6: Wake at around midnight to a light breakfast, and then prepare for the summit ascent. This part of the hike is carried out during the early morning before dawn so that the climbers reach Uhuru Peak at around sunrise. Leave at about 1:00am and reach Gilman’s Point at about 7:00am. The climbers are met with views of the crater from Gilman’s Point because it is on the Crater Rim. Another 2 hours of hiking brings the climber to Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft) at about 8:30 am. From there you will descend back to Kibo Huts, collect your things and cross the saddle again at Horombo Huts where you will spend the night. Eat dinner and get some well-deserved sleep.

Day 7: Wake as usual, pack and descend to Mandara Huts. Take lunch there and continue on to the park gate where you will be met by your transport back to Moshi. You should reach the park gate around 2 or 3 PM. Wake as usual, pack and descend to Mandara Huts. You now drive back to Moshi for a long over due hot shower, Overnight in
Springlands hotel. It is recommended and tips are highly appreciated at the end of their trip. Tips can be given to the Guide at Springlands Hotel. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point (5685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.

Day 8: After an early breakfast, Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for your departure flight back home.
